In 1992, PacifiCare of California became the state's first health maintenance organization to earn a
three-year, full accreditation from NCQA. The plan subsequently earned a one-year accreditation in 1995 and
a second three-year, full accreditation in 1997. In 1999, PacifiCare of California earned Commendable
accreditation from NCQA.
NCQA accreditation is a nationally recognized evaluation that purchasers, regulators and consumers can use
to assess managed care plans. NCQA accreditation evaluates how well a health plan manages all parts
of its delivery system, physicians, hospitals, other providers, and administrative services, in order to
continuously improve health care for its members.
